HAY and Comwell Hotel

Here is an extraordinary design collaboration that was brought to my attention recently - in this case, it's between a hotel and a furniture brand. Welcome to Comwell Aarhus, a hotel in Denmark whose interiors were fully designed by the internationally renowned furniture and interior manufacturer, HAY. This successful Danish design house had their hand in creating everything from the carpet and wallpaper right through to furnishing all the rooms with their well known furniture and accessories to make the Comwell Aarhus truly unique - a classic Danish design with a modern twist. I wonder if visitors who stay here try to steal anything...how tempting!

Modernist Beach Home

We have been having lovely, sunny and calm Wellington weather at the start of our winter season, so it doesn't feel so bad to share this modernist beach home from Sydney, rather than a cosy cabin today. It's no surprise that this home is so stylish as it is the home of interior stylist and buyer, Karen Kelly Tarasin and her family - and it has made the cover of the latest Inside Out magazine. Bills Hawaii

I've yet to visit the original Bills restaurant in Sydney, however I can say I have enjoyed food by Bill Granger through his recipe books and it is delicious. Check out his latest new restaurant, Bills Hawaii in Waikiki - it carries on the same qualities that all of Bill Granger's restaurant have - sunny, easy going and generous. With the beach bar on the lower level and the dining upstairs, these interiors reflect the relaxed island vibe of Honolulu so well. Photographs by Mikkel Vang.

Living Well with Traditional and Modern

Claudio Luti and Maria Castelli I have been working with a client who has a traditional home and at present we are adding new pieces of daring modern furnishings to create a more interesting and eclectic interior. I was glad to come across this Italian home of Claudio Luti and his wife, Maria Castelli as it is a great example of what we are trying to achieve. Luti is the chairman and owner of Italian furniture company, Kartell so naturally pieces from this innovative brand are scattered throughout the home. These interiors demonstrate how taking the bold step to mix influences can be so successful and stylish. Violet velvet Pop chairs by Piero Lissoni sit in the library Kartell T-tables by Patricia Urquiola and a Bourgie lamp by Ferrucio Laviani are part of the mix in this living area A Mr Impossible chair, Cindy lamp and Combak chair sit well in this traditional setting. Designworks Award Winning Office

I like hearing when good things happen to friends and colleagues in the design industry. In this case, a former design student of mine, now a member of the Spatial team at Designworks, winning at the Interior Design Awards 2014 earlier this month. Designworks won the Best Workplace Design for their own office in Auckland and their design team member, Erini Compton has graciously shared the images with me to show us why. Designed around the idea of 'working naturally', the open plan space encourages staff and clients to interact, collaborate and brainstorm effortlessly in this stylish and welcoming environment. Several areas are defined by furnishings, finishes, lighting and other design details to encourage the different kinds of 'working'. This feels right, especially for a design firm, to have an office like this for creative people as to assist them to perform at their creative best within these spaces. It all looks good to ...
